My rating: 4 of 5 stars
One would expect that the last book of a series would be explosive, spectacular and satisfactory. Whether or not the ending is happy or not, readers expect some sort of conclusion to the story. That, however, was not to the case with this book.
I am in love with this series, and like all the series I have read and loved, I thought beforehand that this book would deserve 5 stars. And why not, I loved all the earlier books - Kimberly Derting certainly has a knack for suspense. Compared to the previous books in this series, where I would read anxiously onto the next page, tripping over words to make it to what happens next, this book was a disappointment. There was mystery but it was lacking - on its own you would commend it for its brilliance but when you have already experienced the earlier three books, it's a bit lacking.
I don't know if it's the norm but usually the back story or mythology - most of it, at least - is revealed during the second or third book of series, very rarely in a last book. Only the really big reveals are left for the last. But it seemed that with all about Violet's grandmother coming out in this book, there were a lot of things happening. There was not much forward progress to the story. With these additional story lines, there were a lot of loose ends. Who are the people running the centre? All we find out is that there is a change in management and Violet is supposed to trust them? She doesn't even know who is running it - how can you trust them? Another thing - there are still unresolved things between Violet and Rafe. Sure, she loves Jay (who wouldn't? He's the perfect boyfriend) but didn't she feel a twinge of jealousy for Chelsea?
The climax. Oh, it came out of nowhere. I turn the page and suddenly I am at the epilogue. I was like - WTF just happened? Is this book really finished? I actually checked the author's site and anywhere I could to confirm whether this really is the last book. Even more than a month later, I am still troubled by how this series ended. I am not satisfied. Here's hoping we see more of Violet and Jay in the future.
